3D Laser Scanner

What is a 3D laser scanner used for?

3D laser scanning is a construction, engineering, and architectural tool often used to document the existing conditions (as-builts) of any structure.

3D laser scanners use LiDAR (light detection and ranging) to measure and record precise locations and distances, ultimately producing a point cloud file. These lightweight and mobile scanners produce highly accurate digital measurements and images quickly and easily for use in construction and engineering projects. That data is invaluable in design, prefabrication, asset management, and facility modifications.

Precision as-built laser scans have huge benefits for construction companies, and industrial LiDAR scanners are portable, can be automated, and are accurate within millimeters.

How many types of 3D scanners are there?

Long range 3D scanners come in two major formats - Pulse based and phase shift – both of which are well suited for large objects such as buildings, structures, aircraft, and military vehicles. Phase shift 3D scanners also work well for medium range scan needs such as automobiles, large pumps and industrial equipment.

Scanner FAQ

Q: How Does 3D Laser Scanning Work?

A: The primary way a laser scanner works is to send light pulses at high speed which reflect off objects and return to the scanner’s sensor (LiDAR). For each pulse, the distance between the scanner and object is measured by determining the elapsed time between the sent and received pulses. Each data point is converted to a pixel with a known x, y, and z coordinate.
Laser scans are taken in multiple positions around a site from varying viewpoints. Millions of data points are captured and processed into a point cloud, creating an accurate 3D as built data set of the site. This all happens very quickly, with some scanners, capturing and calculating 2 million points per second with 2-4 mm accuracy.

Q: How accurate is 3D laser scanning?

A: The accuracy of the scanning means the permissible deviation of each point captured. Generally, the accuracy of 3D scanners is within a range of 0.01 mm to 0.1 mm.

Q: What is 3D laser scanning services?

A: 3D Laser Scanning is a non-contact, non-destructive technology that digitally captures the shape of physical objects using a line of laser light. 3D laser scanners create “point clouds” of data from the surface of an object.

Q: What can I do with a 3D scanner?

A: Digitization: 3D scanners can digitize physical objects into digital models that can be stored, shared, edited or reproduced using software or hardware tools. They can also create virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) experiences using digital models.

Q: What is the difference between LiDAR and laser scanner?

A: There are some key differences between the two: Technology: Lidar uses a single laser beam that is steered using a rotating mirror or prism, while laser scanners use multiple laser beams that are emitted simultaneously.

Q: How long does a 3D scanner last?

A: A good 3D scanner is going to last around 10 years, so you need to know what kind of support you'll be getting over this long period of time.

Q: What is mobile laser scanning?

A: Mobile Laser Scanning System (MLS) designates the acquisition of 3D data by means of one or several laser scanners mounted on a mobile platform.

Q: What is a blue light 3D scanner?

A: The blue light 3D scanner is primarily based on structured light 3D scanning technology and consists of a camera, projector, and lens system for data collection. These scanners can perform quick surface scans with the finest resolution in the range of a few microns and the highest accuracy.
